Discover Shibuya, Tokyo

With a planned multi-million dollar transformation already underway, Shibuya is an ever-evolving, exciting part of Tokyo, which also happens to be one of my favourite spots. Here you’ll find an eclectic mix of modern and traditional Japanese culture. An energetic place, full of fun and fashionistas, this hub links Aoyama, Harajuku, Omotesando, Ebisu, Daikanyama, Yoyogi-Uehara, Nakameguro and other popular areas with the young and the trendy.

Most famous is the Shibuya street crossing, where tourists and locals alike flock, shuffling their way across in every direction as soon as the traffic lights turn to red. A great spot to witness all the action is from the 2nd level at Starbucks, where you can grab a refreshment, locate a window seat, and watch in wonder as thousands of pedestrians scramble across, unbelievably without bumping into each other.

Shibuya is renowned for its wonderful and often whacky shops, and it’s practically impossible to leave without at least one shopping bag in hand. There is also an entire plethora of diverse and delicious dining options to choose from. Give yourself at least a full day to immerse yourself in the ambience of this fast-paced and fascinating area.

SCRUBYSNACKS RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION – SHIBUYA

Kaikaya by the Sea in Shibuya is a seafood restaurant that offers a cool, quirky and fun atmosphere, with food that is out of this world. In fact, you might even be fooled into thinking that you were actually by the sea, thanks to its laid-back attitude, surfboards and other ocean-related paraphernalia covering each wall. Make sure you get there early or book a table in advance as this is a very popular spot, and for good reason. Their house special ‘spare ribs’ are a must, unbelievably made from the most succulently fresh, meaty sea tuna, cooked to melting perfection, which will undoubtedly make you regret sharing. Their deep-fried crab meat spring rolls and fresh sashimi selections are simply sensational. Ask the chef for their best recommendations on the day and you will not be disappointed.
